Fluoropolymers and Thermoplastic Coatings in the Automotive Industry

PPC Specializes in Industrial Coating Applications for the Automotive Industry and has been retained  by several automotive OEMs  since the past two decades in servicing their Fluoropolymers and Thermoplastic coatings requirements month on month.

Coatings that we apply include:

  • Teflon® from Chemours/ DuPont Performance Coatings
  • Xylan®, produced by PPG Whitford Worldwide
  • Nylon, particularly Rilsan® Nylon from Arkema
  • Epoxy and other basic powder coatings
  • PE, Polyethylene and Plastisol coatings
  • Zinc Flake, Zinc Aluminium Flake Coating

Properties of Fluoropolymers and Thermoplastic Coatings

Fluoropolymers:

  1. Chemical Resistance: Exceptional resistance to harsh chemicals, fuels, and solvents.
  2. Thermal Stability: High resistance to extreme temperatures, withstanding up to 260°C (500°F) or more.
  3. Low Friction & Non-stick Properties: Provides excellent anti-adhesive surfaces, reducing wear and tear.
  4. Weather Resistance: UV-resistant and non-reactive to environmental elements, enhancing longevity.
  5. Electrical Insulation: Superior dielectric properties, making them useful in electronic components.

Thermoplastic Coatings:

  1. Impact Resistance: High toughness and flexibility, reducing the risk of cracking or chipping.
  2. Corrosion Protection: Forms a barrier against moisture, chemicals, and oxidation.
  3. Aesthetic Appeal: Available in various colors and finishes to enhance the appearance of automotive parts.
  4. Ease of Application: Can be applied via electrostatic spray, fluidized bed, or hot melt coating methods.
  5. Recyclability: Many thermoplastic coatings are eco-friendly and can be reprocessed.

Applications in the Automotive Industry

  1. Engine and Exhaust Systems
  • Fluoropolymers such as PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) and PFA (Perfluoroalkoxy) are used in gaskets, seals, and tubing to withstand high temperatures and aggressive chemicals.
  • Thermoplastic coatings are applied to exhaust components to reduce heat absorption and prevent corrosion.
  1. Fuel and Fluid Handling Systems
  • Fluoropolymer coatings protect fuel lines, hoses, and tanks from chemical degradation.
  • Thermoplastic coatings provide resistance against fuel permeation, enhancing vehicle efficiency.
  1. Brake and Suspension Components
  • Low-friction fluoropolymer coatings are applied to brake pistons and calipers to improve performance and durability.
  • Thermoplastic coatings are used in suspension springs and other components to prevent corrosion and improve lifespan.
  1. Electrical and Electronic Components
  • Fluoropolymers serve as insulation for automotive wiring and connectors due to their high dielectric strength.
  • Thermoplastic coatings provide protection to battery terminals and sensor housings, improving reliability.
  1. Body and Chassis Protection
  • Thermoplastic coatings such as polyamide and polyethylene are applied to underbody parts for enhanced corrosion and impact resistance.
  • Fluoropolymer-based clear coatings are used on exterior body panels to protect against UV radiation and environmental damage.
